The Muscogee (Creek) Nation Lighthorse Tribal Police Department is comprised of 108 employees.

The Muscogee (Creek) Nation Police Department maintains records on businesses located on the Tribal Complex. The purpose of these records is to provide emergency personnel with contact information in case of an emergency (i.e. burglary, fire, open door) at the business after hours. Patrol Division

Individuals assigned to the Patrol Division comprise the uniformed officers who primarily patrol the Muscogee (Creek) Nation
in marked police cruisers. Patrol officers are responsible for, but are not limited to, include:

Enforcing tribal and state laws, and federal statutes
Preserving the public peace
Preventing, detecting, and investigating crimes
Protecting lives, property, and individual rights
Apprehending and prosecuting offenders

K-9 Units

The Lighthorse Police Department is equipped with a K-9 unit. Since the program began in 2003, the K-9 program has proven to be an extremely valuable tool in the effective investigation and suppression of criminal activity, not only to MCNLH, but to many of the surrounding communities and law enforcement agencies.

Criminal Investigations Division

The Criminal Investigations Division is responsible for the investigations of Major Crimes that occur in the Muscogee (Creek) Nation. There are currently 13 Criminal Investigators for the Lighthorse Police. Investigators generally investigate crimes that require specialized training in areas such as property crimes, personal crimes, physical and sexual child abuse, and white-collar crimes, (frauds and forgeries) in Indian Country.

Communication Division

It is the mission of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation Lighthorse Tribal Police Department Communications Division to safeguard the lives and property of the people we serve, to reduce the incidence of fear and crime, and to enhance public safety while working with the communities within the Muscogee (Creek) Nation to improve their quality of life. Our mandate is to do so with honor and integrity, while at all times conducting ourselves with the highest ethical standards to maintain public confidence. Duties and Responsibilities

The Communications Division serves as a central hub of the Lighthorse Police Department. It provides radio, telephone, and teletype services to all of the counties and cities within the Muscogee (Creek) Nation. The Communications Division also works with other police jurisdictions within and outside the Creek Nation on a 24-hours-a-day, seven-days-a-week basis. Receiving incoming telephone and radio requests for emergency and non-emergency service, taking critical information by phone and radio for the public and field personnel, prioritizing requests for emergencies, and dispatching calls for services, while maintaining constant awareness of field personnel.

Training Program

We believe in equipping our communications officers with knowledge and abilities to become a vital first link in emergencies. We provide our trainees with 16 weeks of phase training. Continuous training thereafter is provided as refreshment and as new techniques become available in the field of dispatching.

Explorer Program

The Muscogee (Creek) Nation Lighthorse Tribal Police Department is proud to be the first Tribal Police Exploring Post in the state of Oklahoma, as well as just one of the few in the United States. Law Enforcement Exploring is a program created by the Boys Scouts of America, for young people, boys, and girls, with an interest in law enforcement as a possible career. The program is designed to give those that join a hands-on experience in law enforcement. The program is also a way to get young people involved in their communities through the community service that the post takes part in; this also shows the communities that the youth do care about their community.

Character Building
Although character development is primarily a parent’s responsibility, it is also contributed to by law enforcement. The explorer who wears the uniform or insignia that identifies him/her as being associated with the Muscogee (Creek) Nation Lighthorse Police Department is held to a far more rigid standard of conduct than his/her peers. Explorers are judged by law enforcement personnel and quickly learn that only the highest standard of conduct is acceptable.

Leadership Development
Through their experience, Explorers learn and practice leadership skills similar to law enforcement personnel. Those Explorers in leadership positions within the explorer post learn the realities of being responsible for all subordinates’ achievements and shortfalls.
